Curing Insomnia
Q0060: If the jinn doesn't let the person sleep then they can't help it because they become mentally weaker by sleep deprivation. Its a trap, how can the person break it?
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Wa alaykum as salam
There are two reasons why a person would be affected by insomnia. Either there is a lifestyle/ medical cause or a spiritual reason. I will first discuss the spiritual reason then the natural reasons (please see practical advice at the end).
All animals, humans and jinns are created with a circadian rhythm. A natural biological clock that governs when the body needs to sleep and wake up.
The reason why people who are possessed suffer from insomnia is because there are two individuals in one body i.e. the soul of the victim and the jinn. The characteristics of the one who is strongest in the body will be most dominant. So if the person is stronger in their eman and and does a lot of ruqya on themselves then the jinn will remain weak and not noticeable.
But if the jinn is stronger then the person begins to display the characteristic of the jinn. Jinns are nocturnal by nature so they stay awake all night and sleep in the day. They wake up close to Maghrib time and spread out.

The jinns seek to keep people awake at night or make them feel too scared to go to sleep for three reasons
1. To enjoy entertainment. A person who is awake at night will most likely watch TV or browse the internet.
2. To make them commit sins.
3. To make them miss salah and the protective adkhaar. This in term makes a person tired and unproductive the following.

Thus the cycle continues. Sins leads to more sins. The only way to break this cycle is to have discipline and conviction that you want to change, you don't want to commit sins anymore, be pure, and if you stay awake let it only be to worship rather than entertainment or sin.
This might seem impossible or you might be reluctant to try this. The waswasah you'll get from the jinn is that "I've never been able to refrain from sin for more than a week how will I manage months on end without committing sins?"
Get negativity out of your head! Jinns feed off and thrive on negative thoughts and pessimism.
But remember your heart is like a car that hasn't been washed for a long time. The colour has become dull, the body work dirty, and the windows grimy. But it's been like that for such a long time that the owner begins to think that, that's the way it just is. Under all the dirt the heart is clean and pure, all it needs is a thorough clean and polish to bring out that true colour, shine and beauty.

Abu Darda (ra) said
”For everything there is a polish and the polish for the heart is the dhikr of Allah”.
Remember the promise of Iblis.
Iblis said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them."
[Al-Hijr 15:39-40]
Yet even Iblis admits that he has no control over Allah's chosen, sincere slaves.
Do you want to be that chosen, sincere slave? If you're answer is 'yes' then you have just taken the most important step forward which is to overcome all obstacles and have will power to takes the first step.
I will give you some practical points to empower you to be free from the captivity of shaytan with the Help and Permission of Allah.

Practical Solution
1. Relax your mind and Make Dhikr of Allah.
As you are laying in bed, empty your mind of all thoughts, try to keep it blank and empty, visualize yourself in a dark room or on a beach if you like and relax. Make which ever dhikr you like and you are not limited to one.
Subhan Allah (How Perfect is Allah! Free from all imperfections)
Alhamdulliah (All praises and thanks are due to Allah)
Allah hu Akbar (Allah is Greater)
Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah's forgiveness)
Allah hum Maghfirili (Oh Allah forgive me)
La ilaha illAllah (There is none worthy of worship except Allah)
La hawla wala quwwatha illa Billah (There is no might or power except with Allah)
Allah hummaghfir li (Oh Allah forgive me)
Durood (Sending peace and blessings on our beloved prophet Muhammed (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم))
Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The Shaytan comes to any one of you whilst he is praying and says, Remember this, remember that, until he finishes his prayer and does not do (this dhikr), or he comes to him when he is lying down and makes him sleepy, until he falls asleep (without doing this dhikr).’”
(Abu ‘Eesaa said: This is a hasan saheeh hadeeth. Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 3332).
2. Make sincere intention to wake up for Fajr. The only things stopping you are;
a) Going to sleep late,
b) Committing sins
c) Not repenting before sleeping.
If you sleep with a pure heart eventually you can wake up for fajr without an alarm clock. But it's better to set the alarm at this stage.
3. If you feel something is physically pushing you or bothering you by preventing you from falling asleep or waking you up after you are asleep. Please Read Ayat Al Kursi also follow the advice here
4. Momorise this dua
Khalid bin Walid (radiAllahu anhu) reported that once he suffered from insomnia.
The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said to him, "Shall I teach you words that will make you go to sleep when you say them? Say (the below):

"O Allah! Lord of the seven Firmaments and whatever they cover, Lord of the seven earths and whatever they contain, Creator of the devils and whoever they mislead, Be my Protector from the evil of all Your Creatures lest some of them may hasten with insolence against me or transgress the bounds. Honoured is he who is in Your Protection and Blessed is Your Name."

5. Natural Method
As mentioned in the beginning all animals, humans and jinns are created with a circadian rhythm. A natural biological clock that governs when the body needs to sleep and wake up.
There is also a secondary system- in humans, melatonin plays an important role in the regulation of sleep cycles (i.e., circadian rhythm). Melatonin is made in the pineal gland (which is located just behind the eyes). When it becomes dusk there is less light entering into the eyes so the brain signals for melatonin production. When it reaches a peaks around 9pm (in natural environment) it induces physiological changes that promote sleep, such as decreased body temperature and respiration rate.
However we live in an age where even when the sun has set we are exposed to bight artificial lights such our houses are lit up, our TV, phones, laptops etc.
It is also made worse become these technologies screen release a blue light wavelength which specifically blocks melatonin production. So we may actually be suffering from delayed melatonin production- instead of peaking at 9pm and making us tired enough to fall asleep it may not peak until 12am, 1am or even 2pm.
Another modern phenomenon is the advent of caffeine which not only exists on coffee but many of the normal day to day foods that we eat. Chocolate, Fizzy Drinks/ Soda, Tea, Green Tea, Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, Breakfast Cereals, Pudding, Hot Cocoa and many more.
Caffeine stimulated the body and prevents sleep by blocking melatoine receptors. So even if you have high levels of tiredness causing melatonin the brain will fail to detect it.
Caffeine has a half life of around 8 hours which means that after 8 hours it has only reduced in your bloodstream by 50%. So even if you have some caffeine at 2pm by 10pm you will still have enough caffine in your blood stream to prevent you from falling asleep.
Avoid drinking too many caffeine drinks (coffee, cola or energy drinks) while you are taking melatonin - especially at bedtime. Caffeine is a stimulant and therefore has the opposite effect of melatonin in your body, reducing its impact.
This should make us question if we really have insomnia or the symptoms of modern life styles.
There is nothing wrong with using natural methods to treat insomnia. There are a few common methods that might help
a) Having a hot bath which relaxes the body.
b) Putting lavender oil on the pillow
c) Having a head massage
d) Listening to some type of "white noise" or background sound that helps the mind relax such as the sound of water fall, rain, waves of the sea, fan, camp fire etc
Please search for an audio online, Youtube video or this app and find the sound that helps you relax the most.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=white.noise&hl=en
(My personal favorite is the camp fire sound. I hope this helps.)
e) Turn down the lights in your room 2 hours before bedtime so the brain knows its time to wind down.
f) Install blue light filter app on your phones and devices. Windows 10 devices have them built in automatically called "Night Light"
g) Finally it sounds so simple but take slow deep breaths as this is proven to relax the body and mind and induce sleep. Please give this final method a try before dismissing it.
Peace and blessings be upon the final messenger Muhammed (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) his family, companions and everyone who follow him in righteousness.
