Can a possessed person held responsible for their actions?
Q0045: Asalamu alaykum, can a possessed person held responsible for their actions?
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
As salamu alaykum,
The amount or level a jinn can influence a person and their character differs from person to person. Sometimes the influence is strong sometimes they are weak. It depends on the nature of the possession and the victim themselves.
The jinn seek to control the heart and mind of the person. The mind is important for what thoughts they get and the decisions they make while the heart is important in how they feel emotionally and spiritually.
There is a conflict between the animal like jinn who follows his own shallow desires, and the angelic muslims self which yearns to worship Allah and increase in spirituality.

What can I do to really weaken the jinn inside me? And other multiple related questions.
The only time the person is not accountable for their actions is when the jinn physically takes control of the body. In this state the person might physically or verbally abusive.
Although the jinn does influence a person to be out of character anything haram they do or any thoughts they act upon is ultimately by choice and therefore necessitates accountability.
Please try to be understanding and more patient towards people who are possessed because they are going through a mental, spiritual and often physical struggle too. It is like a parents in old age, who might have illnesses and as a result of which they find it difficult to control their emotions. They may get angry quickly and say things they don't mean.
A person who is possessed needs to put in that extra effort to control their emotions, whether it is anger, frustration, desires or depression etc. They do need to intensify their ruqya and increase in the remembrance of Allah.
Allah Knows Best.
