Can ruqya be done to treat illnesses

Q0051: Salamu aleykuim. Can ruqya be done to treat illnesses. Can you recommend which surahs to read. Thank you very much.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Wa alaykum as salam.

In short the answer to your question is, yes we can and should do ruqya for ourselves, especially for illnesses that are mild and curable. Such as headaches, muscular, joint and other sources of pain. This is in fact a sunnah that has been neglected and thus our reliance has been placed more and more on medication.

No doubt medication has its appropriate time and place. But we should not neglect our reliance upon on Allah as He alone is the source of cure and medication and ruqya is merely a means.

For example when travelling long distances we check our tyre pressure, oil, fuel and other necessities - which are means of ensuring our safety but not the cause for our safe arrival at our destination. We take our necessary precaution but put our trust in Allah.

Hence it is mentioned in the Quran that prophet Ibrahim (as) said
"...and when I am ill, He heals me"
(Surat ash-Shu'ara' 26:80)
We are often too quick to reach for the medication without at least trying to reduce our aches and pains via the means of ruqya. So by doing ruqya first you are not only increasing your tawwakul (trust) in Allah you are also rewarded for doing so.

Practical Advice

All of the Quran is a form of healing, be it a medical or spiritual problem.
"And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss"
(Surah Isra 17:82)
Any illness that is treatable can be treated with the Quran but that doesn't mean one has to abandon the use of medicine in doing so.

Rather a Muslim uses both medicine and ruqya as a means of treatment but knows that the cure does not come from doctors or raqis, and relies on Allah (azza-wa-jall) for a cure because the cure is only from Allah.

The ayat and hadith are too many to list so I have attached a book which you can refer to find the duas to treat illness.
